Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, it does. According to the independent testing lab of Wiss Janney Elstner Associates, who performed tests on Lok-N-Blok under the International Code Council’s acceptance criteria AC447, Lok-N-Blok meets current National Building Code (IBC/IRC) requirements, including all seismic code requirements for zones A through E.
In the same manner insurers cover wood frame construction (among other conventional forms of construction), there should be no hindrance in the market from utilizing Lok-N-Blok, especially given that Lok-N-Blok meets all requirements of the National Building Code.

Principally, the only tool necessary for building the wall is a rubber mallet or hammer. No nails, glue, or mortar are needed to connect our blocks. The walls lock in place using the integral dovetails and posts/receivers.
The general-purpose structural block is charcoal gray in color. Due to our desire to make the block UV resistant, we added carbon black to our material, which creates the dark color. By leaving in its natural color, Lok-N-Blok can, however, be made in any custom color you desire. Understand though, that any custom color will require a truckload quantity for purchase.
Lok-N-Blok is designed to be cut into segments of three inches to keep the interconnect-ability of the blocks using the dovetails connectors. The blocks have cut lines designed into them which shows where the cut is made. However, when leaving a rough opening for a window or door, you can cut the block at any point without degrading the structural integrity of Lok-N-Blok in any way.
A full range of tests were performed for both smoke development and flame spread at UL’s laboratories in Northbrook IL and those results are detailed in our Design Guide and Technical Manual. A copy of that report can also be obtained by emailing us at info@lok-n-blok.com, and put UL Flame Report in the subject line.
Although Lok-N-Blok was designed for use as a structural building product mainly for use in exterior walls, there is nothing prohibiting its use for interior walls as well.
Standard roof truss will set atop the wall and can be tied to the top plate, which is secured to the blocks by the post tensioning system. In the same manner you would attach your roof system with conventional construction methods, you would attach to Lok-N-Blok. Our design is so simple, it doesn’t require any new methods or tools to construct your project.
The same as with any other conventional materials or conventional form of construction through the simple use of nails, screws, or glues. Lok-N-Blok has a higher holding strength than pine lumber.
The final connection is made using a post tensioning system that runs from the footers or slab vertically through the entire wall to the top plate. This holds the wall to the footer, but it also compresses the entire walls to ensure all interlocks are pulled tightly together.
The blocks are designed to simply interlock together at the corners using the dovetails that are produced in the block. You can use those dovetails along each side of the block to make corners and as well as provide a secure means of interlocking perpendicular walls—no special blocks needed! Details of this, and many other aspects of its use, are described and shown in drawing form in our complete Design Guide and Technical Manual. To download the Guide, go to "PRO CENTER" and scroll down to find the Design Guide PDF link, and download a copy for yourself. Additionally, you will find our complete testing, certifications, and opinion letters all available for you to download too.
This can better be shown by using our cost comparison tool on our "Product" page.

However, in order to properly and accurately compare to other materials, one must consider the total installed overall cost of a constructed wall. Side-by-side comparisons of construction time needed show over a 50% savings in time over wood framing and an 80% time-savings over concrete block walls. Given our wall merely stacks and interlocks together, a wall built with Lok-N-Blok is ready for interior and exterior cladding the minute you are finished. A completed wall ready for finish goods would be competitive in cost to wood framing, making it a very affordable alternative building material.

The middle of the block has integral cavities/channels nearly 1½ inches in diameter running both horizontally and vertically through the body. Greenfield or Romex could be run through this cavity and brought out at any point by simply drilling through the side of the block for access.
Simple, you merely attach sheetrock or finish panels directly to the interior of the block. Given Lok-N-Blok’s holding strength, you can simply nail, screw, or glue finish materials to the surface of the block. Also keep in mind that with a solid wall surface, it is easier in many applications (such as cabinetry) when holding to a solid wall is required – no searching for a stud anymore, or having to pre-block a kitchen before the sheet rock goes up.
You would use the same method used for other forms of construction. You simply leave the rough opening in your block needed to insert the door or window and facially attach the unit using the nailing flange.
The first building, our model home, is to begin erection in First Quarter 2023 in Paducah, KY, near the company’s headquarters. In addition to our model home, we presently have pre-sold materials in multiple markets across the southeastern portion of the US, as well as international commitments in nine countries in the Caribbean, Central, and South America.
